Criminal Defence

Thiru has an established Criminal Defence Practice covering the entire spectrum of criminal offences, including capital offences such as murder and drug trafficking and white collar offences such as cheating and criminal breach of trust.

Thiru has been appointed by the Supreme Court to act in capital cases under the LASCO Scheme. Some of Thiru’s recent criminal defence cases include:

  1. PP v Phuthita Somchit & Anor [2011] SGHC 67. Acting as lead Counsel in Ms. Somchit’s trial, Thiru secured an acquittal on a capital charge of drug trafficking. Ms Somchit was convicted on a lesser charge and sentenced to 9 years’ imprisonment. The Prosecution withdrew its Appeal against the acquittal of Ms. Somchit.
  2. Abdul Salam bin Musthafa v PP [2010] SGCA 38. Acting as lead Counsel in Mr. Salam’s appeal before the Court of Appeal, Thiru secured an acquittal on 3 of the 5 charges that Mr. Salam had been convicted of at his trial in the High Court. Mr. Salam had been represented by another firm at his trial in the High Court.

Civil Litigation

Thiru has an active civil litigation practice as well. He has appeared as lead counsel in a number of shareholders’ disputes in the High Court.

Corporate Advisory

Leveraging on his 3 year stint as an in-house Counsel, Thiru provides SMEs with corporate advice including the drafting of commercial agreements, advising on the acquisition and divestment of businesses and/or companies.
