R. Thrumurgan @ Thiru

Thiru was called to the Bar in 1999 after chambering with the late Mr. R. Palakrishnan, Senior Counsel. Thiru continued to work closely with Pala for over 3 years on numerous matters. Despite his passing, Pala continues to inspire Thiru.

In 2002, Thiru left Pala and joined Rajah & Tann as an Associate. Whilst there, Thiru was invited to join Tyco International Ltd, a US conglomerate, as its Legal Counsel. At Tyco, Thiru served the diverse needs of over 200 Tyco companies in Asia with a total turnover exceeding US$ 3billion. After almost 3 years with Tyco, Thiru was headhunted for the position of Group Legal Counsel of Oiltools International Inc, an oil and gas MNC headquartered in Singapore. Thiru had responsibility for Oiltools global business.

Unable to resist the action and challenge of litigation, Thiru returned to active legal practice with the firm of Allister Lim & Thrumurgan before forming Thiru & Co on 3 March 2008.

Since returning to practice, Thiru has been involved in a good number of civil and criminal trials in the High Court. Thiru, appointed by the Supreme Court to act for Somchit Phuthita and Ismil Bin Kadar, successfully obtained acquittals against the death penalty charges in both the cases.

Thiru credits his strength to the instruction that he has had in the university of life. In 1991, Thiru was awarded the President’s Scout Award and continued to be an active member of the Singapore Scout Association at a fairly senior level. Thiru also obtained his Private Pilot’s Licence whilst still in Law School.
